Empire of the Sun: Was the light from the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima really seen as far away as Shanghai

In the Steven Spielberg movie in Empire of the Sun where a Young British Boy from Shanghai is interred during the Japanese Occupation of China in World War II there’s an interesting scene. I know the movie was based of a guy’s autobiography but I was wondering if this part was true. There’s a part in the movie where one of the boy’s neighbors at the camp passes away. He sees a light to the east and thinks it’s her soul going to heaven but finds out later it’s actually the blast from the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Is that true? Was the light from the atomic bomb dropped really seen as far away as Shanghai?
